Sasco is the leading service provider to the Southern African sugar companies, an industry that uses a wide range of process weighing scales, the most important of which is the Mixed Juice Scale.
A Mixed Juice Weigher is a type of process weighing scale that is critical in sugar mills and is used to measure the amount of juice extracted from sugarcane. Liquids in these scales are maintained at close to 90 degrees Celsius.
When sugar cane is crushed, it produces juice that contains both sugar and non-sugar components. The juice is then processed to remove the non-sugar components, leaving behind a concentrated syrup that is further processed to produce sugar.
The Mixed Juice Weigher measures the total volume of juice extracted from the sugar cane, including both the sugar and non-sugar components. This information is used to calculate the amount of sugar that can be produced from the juice and to monitor the efficiency of the milling process.
Several years ago, the South African metrology regulations were changed to require that Mixed Juice Scales be trade approved. This meant that all existing Mixed Juice Scales had to be upgraded with new instrumentation capable of meeting trade tolerance accuracy.
