Africa’s has 110 ports of which the largest 15 handle approximately 5% of the worlds global shipping volumes.

In terms of container volumes, the Port of Durban South Africa is the most active, followed by Lagos Nigeria and Mombasa Kenya. Both Mombasa and Lagos also have high volumes of non-containerized cargoes.

Major ports which are specialized on the exports of mined commodities are Saldanha Bay South Africa – an ore exporting port with volumes of 70m tonnes annually, Maputo Mozambique – handling 20 million tonnes of mainly chrome and magnetite exports and Richards Bay South Africa.

Other significant Africa ports include Port De Djibouti, Djibouti – serves as the gateway to Ethiopia and as a global transhipment port, Abidjan, Ivory Coast – the most crucial port in West Africa, and Tangier, Morocco, Dar es Salaam Tanzania, Luanda Angola, Matadi DRC and Nacala Mozambique.

With Africa booming and the population expected to double by 2050, there is going to be substantial growth and investment in both in the large, medium-sized and smaller ports across the region.
